New to 123-reg dedicated servers?

Why might I want a dedicated server?

Because you're not sharing your server with anyone else, dedicated servers offer improved performance and flexibility over shared hosting. You’ll get the full advantage of the processing power of the machine, no artificial cap on the amount of bandwidth you can use, and complete control over your hosting set-up. You’ll also have the space and the tools to host multiple sites on one server, and can even sell webspace on to customers of your own.

What can I use my dedicated server for?

Provided it's in line with our Terms and Conditions, you can use your server for whatever you like – be it developing websites for other people, hosting your business website or even setting up an online store.

Do I need any technical knowledge to operate a dedicated server?

We make everything as simple as we possibly can, but you will need a basic knowledge of how servers work and of virtual servers.

Your level of control will be such that you will be completely responsible for setting up websites on the server and deciding their bandwidth and web space allowance, as well as managing the files they upload. You will also need to ensure you create backups of the data stored on your server.

What does unmetered or unlimited bandwidth mean?

Unmetered / unlimited bandwidth means that there is no limit set on your account for the amount of traffic visiting your sites. Many hosting companies set an artificial limit and then charge you extra if your site's popularity causes you to exceed this limit. However, because we have access to our own tier 1 network we are able to offer our customers unmetered bandwidth on the 123-reg dedicated servers product range. You will therefore be able to use as much bandwidth as the physical capabilities of the server allow.

We really want unlimited to mean unlimited for everyone, but to prevent those annoying few from spoiling the party an acceptable usage policy applies.

How long does it take to set up?

Typically, your server will be set up almost immediately. However, in exceptional circumstances this may not be possible . On these rare occasions, the 123-reg team will be able to offer advice.

Technical questions

But can't I host my server in-house rather than with you?

Of course you can – but you'll probably find that it's much cheaper and less hassle to go with a 123-reg dedicated server. After all, you get uninterrupted access to our powerful tier 1 network, carrier-class high-security data centres, and experienced technicians who can be on site 24/7.

What operating system and web server will my server be supplied with?

Our Windows servers are supplied with Windows 2003 Web Edition and Microsoft IIS, and our Linux servers are supplied with Ubuntu and Apache.

What software can I install on my server?

Whatever you like! But please bear in mind that we are only able to offer support for your server as supplied, and if you do not take up the option to have root access.

Do I get full access to the server?

By default you will not be given "root" access to the server, as most of the functions you are likely to need can be performed using your web-based control panel. However, if you wish to have root access to your server, you are welcome to request it via your control panel. Please note that if you do so, we will subsequently be unable to provide a patching and update service or offer any technical support. You would therefore need to be solely responsible for the security and maintenance of your server.

Should I back up my data?

We strongly recommend that you create your own data backups. Don’t forget that backups don’t just protect against you losing everything in the unlikely event of a hardware failure – taking regular backups also means that if any changes you make cause problems you can reinstate the last working configuration of your system.
