  • Improve overall security
  • Control all domains under your gTLDs

What are generic top level domains?

.brand domains or generic top-level domains (gTLDs) will soon become a company's new Internet address. This means that .brand will replace the .com, .co.uk, or .net domain extensions.

From the start of 2012, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) opened up the new gTLDs registration thus allowing companies to register a top level domain name and secure their business on the net. This opens the door to hundreds of great domain extensions. Brands can register branded domains such as .canon or .apple or more generic but still relevant domains such as .movie, .hotel, .shop.

What happens next?

ICANN have already got the ball rolling and the window for new user registrations through ICANN's TLD Application System (TAS) has now closed, but there is still loads happening...

12th April

Application window Closes - The last day ICANN will accept applications for new gTLDs

1st May

"Reveal Day" - ICANN will publicly post all gTLD character strings that have been applied for and who has applied for them. This is also when anyone can submit comments or formal objections to any of the new gTLD applications.

12th June

Initial Evaluation Begins - The period of Initial Evaluation begins and those who have applied for gTLDs are evaluated to see if there may be technical, operational, financial or organisational issues with the new gTLDs.

12th November

Results of Initial Evaluation - The period of Initial Evaluation period ends and ICANN posts whether any gTLDs that have been applied for have passed or failed the evaluation. GTLDs that have failed can request an Extended Evaluation.

29th November

Last day to request Extended Evaluation - This is the last day applicants can request Extended Evaluation which allows for a further exchange of information to clarify applicant information. Extended Evaluation is only available for applicants who failed certain reviews in the Initial Evaluation.

30th November

Later phases for complex applications - This last phase is to start resolving issues in complex applications. A complex application for example could be if more than one party has applied for the same gTLD. In this phase attempts to resolve such contentions begin.

Why apply for new gTLDs?

Imagine you had one of these new gTLDs such as .secure at the end of the URL for your online data security business. Think how much more credible your business would appear and how easy you could build your customers' trust.

Or how many more potential customers you can bring to visit your site when you have a location based domain extension such as .berlin or .nyc. gTLDs are an excellent way to set you apart on the Internet, build customer trust and increase revenue.

123-reg believe that generic top level domains will be the next big thing in domains and as the anticipated demand will be so great we recommend starting your new gTLDs registration as soon as possible.

The Internet is changing and so is your address. Register your interest above and we will let you know as soon as new gTLDs become available.
