Job title: Data Centre Operations Shift Engineer
What does your job involve?
As the job title provides a clue, it is our team's job to support the data centre and all operations within. The role contains three main elements:
How's it going so far?
It's going great! I've learnt a lot in the 5 weeks that I have been here due to the great support from fellow co-workers. I'm now able to carry out many of the important tasks that the role entails, without assistance. It's very fulfilling at the end of the day to look back at all the work accomplished. I think it's great how all the teams in the office integrate together to make the cogs turn; it's certainly visible!
How would you describe working at Webfusion?
I'd describe it as diving in the deep end with a float! Along with the multitude of tasks and the responsibility which I have gained within the first few weeks of being here, support is always available. One thing I've noticed is that there's no them and us' culture; it's always a we are one' culture. This is reflected by both the open plan office and the way everyone interacts with each other.
What do you think of the environment and office?
The environment is relaxed; people here work hard but also enjoy a good laugh from time to time. We have fresh fruit delivered to the office every week and have a room with gaming facilities should you want to have a competition against co-workers! As we offer 24x7 support, the office never sleeps, so there's always someone around.
What's the best thing about working here?
Being able to physically see the company growing and moving upwards. The new data centre is a testament to the growth of the company and the dedication and hard work that everyone in the company is putting in to ensuring that we are the best in our industry. There's nothing better than knowing that we're all working collectively to achieve this, with new opportunities appearing as a result. It really is an exciting time to be working here!
Any plans for the future?
With our new data centre currently being built on the site, exciting opportunities will be arising in the near future. We'll be supporting another data centre which will bring us even more responsibility. I'm looking forward to broadening my skill-set too inevitably from further experience as a Data Centre Operations Engineer.
Job title: HR & Recruitment Officer
What does your job involve?
I am responsible to provide comprehensive HR-related support and I handle the end-to-end recruitment process for Webfusion. That means I'm involved in advertising for new employees, interviewing, giving feedback and sending out offer packs. Then, once they've accepted the offer, I make sure everything's ready for their first day.
Basically, it's everything up until the moment someone actually joins the company.
How's it going so far?
It feels like it's gone really well so far. I do really enjoy it. I had a good handover that really helped me hit the ground running. My manager started giving me extra responsibility quite quickly, so it felt like he trusted me and I was doing a good job.
How would you describe working at Webfusion?
Excellent organisation to work for, there's no denying you get a lot of responsibility and you learn a lot. Everyone is friendly and always willing to help and the working environment is really good.
What do you think of the environment and office?
It's a really good and fun environment to work as having a open plan office really breaks the barriers. There is flexitime and you can take tea breaks / lunch break whenever you like. It can be very relaxed at times, but that's helped me get to know people.
What's the best thing about working here?
The working environment, flexibility and the people as you are able to talk to anyone in the company. Everyone's so friendly and the HR team is great to work with and I enjoy my work I do.
Any plans for the future?
My time at Webfusion will definitely help me build my career further as I have always wanted to go into HR.
Job title: HR assistant
What does your job involve?
I'm at Webfusion as a placement student. I handle the end-to-end recruitment process for Webfusion. That means I'm involved in advertising for new employees, interviewing, giving feedback and sending out offer packs. Then, once they've accepted the offer, I make sure everything's ready for their first day.
Basically, it's everything up until the moment someone actually joins the company.
How did you first join Webfusion?
I'm at Coventry University doing business studies. I'm on a placement year - I found the vacancy at Webfusion advertised online, so I applied there.
The assessment day here was bigger than other assessment days. I was actually quite surprised - a lot of companies do online tests, then telephone screening, but Webfusion invited me straight in for interviews.
There were other students here when I joined, and they helped me. I actually now live in Hillingdon with three other people in the company.
How's it going so far?
It feels like it's gone really well so far. I do really enjoy it. I had a good handover from the girl doing it before, and that really helped me hit the ground running. My manager started giving me extra responsibility quite quickly, so it felt like he trusted me and I was doing a good job.
I haven't felt anxious about the situation and it's given me a say in how the HR processes change, and how we could do things better. It's also encouraged me to look at processes anew and shape those changes.
What have your learnt so far, and what do you think you'll take away from your placement?
I'll take a lot of positives from my time here - and it's not just about learning how to work with people in the workplace. The size of the company is great - most people here know who I am. I'm not just an anonymous HR assistant' like I would be in a bigger company.
I was only 19 when I started here, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I'm certainly glad I came into a place like this where I've been able to learn what working in a company is really like.
It hasn't been exactly what I expected, but it's been better - I've been made to feel confident and at ease. The open plan office makes it really easy to ask questions.
I'm not doing an HR degree and I'm not an IT person, so it was quite a challenge. Even web hosting terminology was completely new to me. But you kind of just settle into it.
I have to be responsible - I can't just palm things off because my tasks aren't in anyone else's job description - it's my job to do them. For instance, I have to talk to employment agencies - it was intimidating to begin with, but now I do it all the time, so I know how to agree the right terms and reduce their fees.
How would you describe working at Webfusion?
There's no denying you get a lot of responsibility and you learn a lot. Sometimes everyone's quite busy, but people are friendly. It makes it easier to talk to them.
You don't feel shut out from things either. Even though I'm in HR, our objectives are linked with the company's overall aims, so you know what you're working towards.
How have you progressed since you started working here?
In HR I've taken on more responsibilities. I can run payroll and do admin when the person responsible for it is away. And I've learnt a lot from sitting in on discussions about employee relations and employment law.
I get the time to read and learn things too - for instance, our legal team is good at forwarding on relevant information. Obviously there are days when you have to stay late and help out with other things - you complain when you're doing it, but ultimately it feels good to be helping someone out.
What do you think of the environment, the office?
It's good there's flexitime and you can take tea breaks whenever you like. It can be very relaxed at times, but that's helped me get to know people.
What's the best thing about working here?
It's being able to talk to anyone in the company. I have to talk to them for various reasons, but after a while you stop talking to them just about work.
Everyone's so friendly. I find the differences between people really interesting, and it's interesting to see how people work together. Everyone here is an individual - we're not in suits and we're not sat in offices. You get to know the real people.
Any plans for the future?
My time at Webfusion will definitely help me in my last year at university.
I'm not sure if I ultimately want to go into HR, but what I've learnt has been invaluable. I probably know more about how to manage people than some managers do!
What's the social life like?
I've got involved in lots of different things, like the culture task force. And I like being able to talk to people in all different departments - I'm not just sat in the HR office, but I'm getting an understanding of how the different departments work together.
Job title: Conversion executive
What does your job involve?
I help to improve the experience people have when they visit our websites, by testing and measuring how different approaches affect how people use our sites. I also analyse statistics to look at how the website is performing, how visitors behave when they use it.
I guess it's a combination of maths, marketing and psychology - ultimately my aim is to help find ways to give customers the best possible experience of using our websites, so they become more loyal to us.
How did you first join Webfusion?
I started out as a placement student - I took a year out from my degree to spend time working in industry. I was studying marketing, so when I started it was as a marketing assistant on a year-long placement.
The placement went well, so I carried on working part time once the year was up - and since graduating I've gone back to working for Webfusion four days a week.
How have you progressed through the company?
I wasn't sure if the placement would lead to a permanent job, and if I'm honest I don't think I'd have wanted to come back into a pure marketing role. But I started dabbling in customer experience work and web statistics because I had a personal interest in statistics and psychology. I guess to begin with I was self-taught, and my manager channelled that.
Those interests matched a gap in the team, so I've been able to grow into that role over time.
I really like the psychology side of it - and it's black and white. You can use statistics to back everything up - there's no need to guess what people would like you to change on your website. You can test it and actually prove what works best.
I'm still learning now. I spend a third of my time learning: reading articles blog posts and guides. When I took this role said I wanted the time to learn - I'd had no prior training apart from what I'd taught myself, so it was important I've been given the time to develop.
What do you do on a typical day?
It's all about gathering and analysing data - but there's a wide picture that I have to think about. My job is to identify trends in our data - about how our websites are being used and what people are buying. I spend a lot of time helping our product management and marketing staff prove or disprove theories they have.
For instance, they might be looking at reducing the price of a product, or changing the design of part of the website. I can analyse the impact that has through live testing, where you run two or more versions side by side to see how they perform.
I'm also part of our group research project. It's a big piece of work: we want to know who our customers really are, because it's hard to tell even if you run surveys. The idea is to identify customers and opportunities - it's a big, challenging project, but it's a really good opportunity for the company and for me.
Testing is the other big thing I do. We do a lot of what's called multi-variant testing' to try and prove or disprove what works best on our website. Ultimately it's about improving the experience people have on our sites, because that increases customer satisfaction levels and improves our bottom line.
I work with web designers a lot. That's really improved my diplomacy skills, because what a web designer thinks will work doesn't always match what the statistics prove works! I work with people in lots different teams, which gives me a real insight into different parts of the business.
What's it like to work at Webfusion?
I have an excellent manager - I can talk to her about personal things if I need to.
I really like that we don't have a blame culture - if there's ever a problem, we sort it out and we don't worry about whose fault it is.
But the best thing about it is probably the flexibility. There's a structure and everything needs to be signed off - but within that I have a lot of independence and freedom.
I'm also a DJ, so I generally only work four days a week. The company has really helped me be able to do that work too - I can usually switch my days if I need to. There aren't many other companies where they'd let you do that. It's a balancing act for me, but the company has been really supportive.
Any plans for the future?
There are more opportunities here. We're a growing business - we recently acquired another hosting company, and I've been working with them to show them what I do.
Job title: Finance assistant
What does your job involve?
I'm most involved in the admin side of finance. My role involves providing reports to help senior management make business decisions.
It was a new role when I first started, so I was able to shape it myself. It's built up over time.
I deal with revenue reports and overhead reports. I've also been assisting managers to create budgets for next year. That's a really big deal and it's very interesting.
I have quite a lot of independence to get on with my tasks. I've enjoyed being able to shape my own responsibilities. I've never missed a deadline and I've never really stopped taking on new things and progressing.
The job is challenging and demanding. I have to give reports to senior management each month and sticking to deadlines is the most important thing. I have to be analytical, and it's really important to be detail orientated. If you're looking at a 52 page report, you have to be careful ― especially when you're dealing with the company directors!
How did you end up joining Webfusion?
I originally applied to Webfusion as a placement student. I was studying for a degree in Business and Management (Accounting) at Brunel University - I saw the vacancy on the Brunel website, and applied.
It was quite a tough selection process. I was one of three people selected for interview ― there was a group interview, then an interview with my manager.
I started in March 2009 and I've now been here for more than two and a half years. I wasn't actually due to start until the summer, but they asked me to start earlier.
To begin with I was working part time - I was studying for my degree at the same time. My full-time placement started in July 2009, and that was meant to run for a full year.
However, I was keen to stay on till September, when the university summer break ended - when I asked, Webfusion were happy to keep me. Then I wanted to stay on part time while I did my final year, and so I did 20 hours a week from September 2010 ― May 2011. Once I'd finished my degree, I went full time again.
Can you describe your typical day here?
Well a good example is the month end. We have to report what happened during the previous month, which means I have to collate lots of information from other people, like revenue figures.
I have to chase people ― you don't want to be a burden on them, but you have to find a way to get them to deliver without being rude. That's definitely a skill I've learnt while I've been here.
I work with all the departments to get reports from them. I have to get it from everyone ―the offices in Leeds and Romania, different departments ... I'm working with everyone!
What do you think of the working environment and office?
Having an open plan office really breaks down barriers. It makes it easy to talk to people ― you still have to do your work, but you can speak to everyone. The finance director sits right near me ― even though he has his own office, he's very approachable and it's really easy to speak to him.
What's the best thing about working here?
When I joined the company, I was just excited. I didn't have any specific expectations - I came in with a free mind. I found the people were great. I've never had any problems with anyone. My manager is great too, and the work is interesting.
Actually, the people are a really big part of why I'm still here. I want to be in an environment where I'm happy.
How have you progressed since you've been here?
I didn't have even the basic experience when I started ― I started in the middle. But I needed the basic experience in order to start my ACCA qualifications. I asked for that, and the company let me do it.
They could have just said no, stick to your role. But actually they've been happy to help me. You couldn't do that in a lot of companies - there would be too many barriers.
People move from department to department here. There's lots of scope for progression.
Any plans for the future?
I'm interested in doing my ACCA qualification [chartered accountancy], and it looks like the company will sponsor me. But wherever I end up, the time I've spent working here has given me really good exposure and experience.
What social activities do you get involved in?
Take Christmas ― the Finance team all went out to central London for Christmas, and then we have the company-wide Christmas party too. And we have competitions in the run up to Christmas - I won two days' extra leave!
We always celebrate people's birthdays too.
Anything else you want to say about working for Webfusion?
Webfusion is a really interesting place to work. You get a lot of exposure and experience, and there are plenty of opportunities. You can't really ask for more.
After I finished my placement, I had to write a placement report on my experiences. It was all about how great the company was!
Job title: Junior Product Manager
What job do you do here?
I'm responsible for our virtual private server range (VPS) on both our Webfusion and 123-reg brands. (VPS) is a type of product we sell to our customers. I manage this range of product, which primerly means staying s ahead of our competitors, finding new opportunities and look for new products to fit into our range.
What does your job involve?
The role consisit of revewing sales preformance, support reports, traffic reports and other areas of the business that ties in with the overall performance of the product and its success.
For instance If I spot something which I think I could improve, I would speak to the right people and work with them implement the improvement and generate the best results possible. I feel that our support and sales team are a vital unit to our business. They spend a lot of time on the phone to customers, so they have plenty of feedback and suggestions to help us improve our products.
Ultimately the business wants to make money, so a key part of my job is costing our products at the right price. I have to work with the finance team to break down those costs - speaking to suppliers and building good relationships with them is generally a good way to get the best price for a product, but it's also about operational costs too, like the price of electricity, support and network costs. All those elements help us work out what price to sell a product at. However more importantly its about attracting our customers with value for money which is what we do best.
I like having the freedom to justify why something should be done in a certain way, doing it, and then see the results. As a results-driven person, it's great because you can see those results quickly.
The way we do this is we generally start with a concept idea, and then move that onto a a business case, requirements documents, before moving to development and implementation.
Being in the industy we're in I have to keep track of industry trends too: how technology is changing, and how the market is moving as a whole.
What sort of support have you received from the company?
I've had to build up my business knowledge over time - I only had basic accounting knowledge when I started and wasn't familiar with business terminology, but I've had the support and the time I needed to build up that knowledge.
I'm part of a fairly small team - there are five of us - so we're close enough to be able to ask each other for help and advice. As a junior that's really important - they help me understand what I need to focus on. I'm left to my own devices, but the guidance is there if I need it.
How have you progressed through the company?
I started off in the support team. My job was support customers over the phones and through a ticketing system. This gave me ab insight into work in an office environment and it felt like I was getting valuable experience.
Most of the work was on the phone, but I did have to communicate with people in other roles too. Working in support, I was able to understand what the business does really well and where it could improve. Then, when I went into product management, I was able to bring that experience with me.
I spent nearly one and a half years in support - then I saw the product management vacancy advertised internally. I applied, had an interview, and I've been in my role since then.
What's the working environment like?
Like any job, the work can sometimes be stressful, but the relationships are great. You can talk to anyone, you can develop a relationship and that makes it easier. By talking to people and getting to know them better, you know when and who to go to.
People here are really helpful. It's good to talk to different people, and in my role I get to deal with people in different departments and offices, often working with parts of the business that aren't that visible.
What's the best thing about working here?
The company has been really flexible. They helped me fit work in around my other commitments - for a time I went part time while I was doing my degree. There's real flexibility, and I really like that.
I've never woken up one day and thought 'oh no, I've got to go to work today'. The positivity rubs off on you - it gives you a good attitude in what you do.
Working here has opened my eyes to new possibilities. It's helped me understand how other businesses operate online. I understand more about business requirements and I can take that elsewhere - it's a transferable skill.
Any plans for the future?
There are two aspects to product management: product management, and product marketing. I'm interested in the marketing side of things. At the moment, I'm learning the fundamentals. But the marketing side is really interesting too - looking at PPC, conversions, different marketing channels etc.
I see no reason I couldn't do that here in the future, if the right opportunity came up. Speaking from experience, I know there are lots of chances to develop within the company.
