How do I change the IPS Tag on my domain name?

This article applies to .co.uk, .org.uk and .me.uk domain names.

An IPS TAG is a way of Nominet (the not for profit company who governs the .uk domain names) giving control of a domain name to a certain company. For example the domain name 123-reg-drupal-website.co.uk currently has the IPS TAG of 123-REG. If you want to move your domain name to another provider you would need to change the IPS TAG to that of your new provider.

To change your domain name’s IPS tag, you will need to do the following:

1

Login to your 123-reg control panel.

2

In the Domain names section, select the relevant domain name in the drop-down list and click on the Manage button.

3

Click on the Change IPS Tag option.

4

Enter the new TAG in the space provided.

5

Click on the Change IPS TAG Now button.

Changing your IPS Tag costs £9.99. To complete the change, please complete the payment system as shown by the on screen instructions.

Once you have changed the IPS TAG away from 123-REG or WEBFUSION, 123-reg will remove the DNS and forwarding services for your domain in 48 hours. If your new provider does not setup DNS on their servers and update your domain within that period, your website may become unavailable. The domain will also be removed from your control panel as we cannot make changes to it once the tag has been changed.

Please note: It normally takes approximately 12/24 hours for this to update. However some providers have a handshake system where they will need to approve the transfer in and therefore the IPS tag may not update automatically. Please check with your new provider if they have this process in place so that they can approve the transfer once you have changed the TAG.
