This article explains why we have placed a Registrar Lock on your domain name.
Domain name renewal scams are nothing new, however the number of them seems to be on the increase. Unethical companies will mislead or try and scare you into transferring your domain name to them. The main tactic that they use is called Domain Slamming!
This is a really simple and quite effective method where they search the all the WHOIS databases for domains and their expiry dates, then months before the domain name is due to be renewed they will send a letter that could look like an invoice. Often they will imply that taking action is a matter of urgency and give a very short time for you to respond in order to renew your domain although the renewal date is months in the future.
If you fill in the form and send off the cheque then they will attempt to transfer the domain name from 123-reg.co.uk or our registrar Tucows, if we did not have the lock on the domain name you would find your domain name, email and website goes offline.
To try and stop this "Domain Slamming" we automatically put a Registrar Lock on the domain name, you can remove this your self in the control panel, but it safeguards your domain name from scams like this.
As for your domain name being renewed, we will always renew your domain names with us unless you tell us not to.
