Backing up your website files using FTP

Before you can begin, you will need the following:

  • A 123 Reg hosting package
  • Your FTP hostname
  • Your FTP username
  • Your FTP password
  • An FTP client

Although you may use any of these clients, the following instructions apply to FileZilla:

Once you’ve downloaded the latest version of FileZilla, you will need to configure it to connect to your 123 Reg web space.

Start by selecting the Site Manager icon in the toolbar.

This will open the Site Manager. From here, click New Site.

Enter a name for your new site and press Enter. Next, you will need to enter the following details:

  1. Protocol: leave this as FTP
  2. Host: your FTP hostname
  3. Port: 21
  4. Logon Type: Normal
  5. User: your FTP username
  6. Password: your FTP password

Once done, click Connect.

After a few moments, you will now be connected to your 123 Reg web space, where you can make copies of your site’s files.

This can be done by right-clicking in the lower-left window and choosing Create directory.

A pop-up window will now appear, asking you to give your directory a name. Once you’ve done this, click OK to continue.

Next, select the folder or files you wish to backup within your site, right-click them and then select Download from the provided menu.

If you wish to download your entire website, select the public_html directory.
