What is an IP address

An Internet Protocol address (IP address) is a numerical label assigned to a device connected to a computer network that uses the internet protocol for communication.

All our servers come with a dedicated IP address that allows them to be uniquely identified on the internet. Some features such as SSL certificates require a separate dedicated IP address so they too have a unique address and they can be easily identified on the internet.

At 123-reg we give you the opportunity to order additional IP addresses to be assigned to your server that you can use to configure SSL certificates. This means you can have multiple SSL certificates on the same server, and is essential if you are hosting multiple websites that all require SSL encryption but you wish to remain completely separate from one another and sharing an SSL certificate is not an option.
