Introducing VPS from 123-reg

Do you want more flexibility from your current hosting? Do you want to host multiple sites? Have you out-grown your existing hosting package?

A Virtual Private Server or VPS is exactly what it says on the tin. A server is split into parts and each part becomes a server in its own right or a "Virtual" server. Each virtual server is completely "private" from the other virtual servers and functions the same as a regular server. But as multiple servers are running under one set of server hardware the running costs are significantly cheaper.

Q. What is a VPS?

A Virtual Private Server or VPS is exactly what it says on the tin. It is a server that is divided into a small number of VPS that share resources. Each VPS is completely "private" from the other VPS and functions the same as a regular server. But as multiple VPS are running under one set of server hardware, the running costs are significantly lower than having your own physical server.

Q. What can you do with a VPS?

With a VPS you can host multiple websites, databases, forums, blogs and much more.

Q. Do I need technical knowledge to use a VPS?

No! The server management software such as Plesk or cPanel simplifies the process of managing your VPS. The easy to use interface is intuitive and means you do not need to have expert knowledge of server administration. What's more, we provide you with step-by-step user guides and videos to help you along the way.

Q. How long does it take to setup a VPS?

123-reg VPS are provisioned very fast so you can be up and running within minutes of placing your order.

Q. How do I contact 123-reg for help?

The first thing to do is to head on over to our support site. We've published loads of information about using website hosting there, so if you've run into a common problem there should be a solution for you.

You can ask us for help through the support site too. Just use the Ask a Question option.

Q. Can you help me move my VPS across from another provider?

No. Sorry, but every provider is different, and that makes it hard for us to provide a transfer service. However, our VPS packages do use technology that is considered standard, so there's a very good chance your website or server configuration will be compatible with our VPS packages.

Q. What is the difference between a dedicated server and a VPS?

A dedicated server is a server that is dedicated to one customer. The full resources of that server are at the customer's disposal making it perfect for highly demanding websites or applications. A VPS is a server that is split into separate segments, each segment behaves like an individual server. This means that a number of VPS can exist on a single server which reduces the cost, but still offers high performance.

Q. What is KVM?

KVM stands for Kernel-based Virtual Machine and is the virtualisation solution we use for our VPS packages. It is the software that makes hosting multiple virtual servers on a single physical server possible. KVM is a Linux based hypervisor that integrates deeply with the host OS, ensuring that each VPS, whether it is running Linux or Windows, can use the hardware to its maximum potential.

Q. Can I buy a VPS without a domain name?

Yes. A VPS does not require a domain to work as the IP address can be used instead. However, you can register or transfer a domain to your server whenever you wish.

Q. I already own a domain name. Can I use it my VPS?

Yes. Just transfer the domain to your 123-reg account and you will be able to use it with your VPS.

Q. My domain name is held with another company. Can I point it at my 123-reg VPS?

Yes, no problem. Read these instructions on our support site.

Q. Is there a minimum contract period?

You can buy a VPS on either a monthly or annual basis. This gives you the freedom to control your own contract period.

Q. How does the money back guarantee work?

If you decide the VPS package you've bought isn't right for you, give us a call within the first 7 working days. We'll refund what you paid - excluding the cost of registering any domain names you have, because domains can't be "unregistered" once you've chosen them.
