Title: What is a database and how do I create one?
This video will look at what a database is and how you can create one using your Web Hosting control panel.
What is a database?
For those who don’t know, a database is used to store information for websites, blogs, forums and can also be used to store your client or customer information.
It’s made up of tables and fields, and if you had a database for let’s say, your blog, then it would contain information regarding your posts and different blog pages.
Please note that databases are only included in Business and Professional hosting packages.
Log into 123-reg control panel
Ok, so if you haven’t already, log into your 123-reg control panel using your username and password.
In the Web Hosting section, select your web hosting package and then click on the manage button.
This is your Web Hosting control panel.
In the Web Tools section, click on the MySQL Databases button.
If you have a Windows hosting package, you have a choice for which type of database you would like to set up.
We’ll be creating a MySQL database now, but if you choose to create a Microsoft SQL Database the steps are the same so you can follow along with us.
Ok so here is where you can create a database.
First you will need to create a username; this will also act as the name of your database, so it’s best to name it something which is relevant to your database.
When creating your username please ensure that it is 9 characters or less, and only contains letters, numbers or these characters.
When creating your username make sure that it contains:
9 characters or less
Only letters, numbers and “_” or “-“
Username cannot start or end with “-“
Cannot contain the words “test” “root” “mysql” or “alive”)
Once you’ve ceated your username, you will need to create a password, and this must be at least 6 characters long.
You can also hav one generated for you by our system, just click on the generate button, but remember to note down the password.
Ok, now click here to create your database.
You will see that your database is listed in this section.
To log in and manage your database, simply enter the password you just created and then click on manage.
This will open up phpMyAdmin where you can begin creating tables for your database, and even import a database you have already created.
If you’ve selected to create a Microsoft SQL database, you’ll be able to begin adding tables just here.
Well that’s it; we’ve learnt what a database is and how to set one up.
