Migrating your Popbox to a Mailbox
This article will help you to migrate your Popbox to a Mailbox.
From 1st September 2021, 123 Reg will stop supporting the use of Popboxes and will be migrating customers over to Mailboxes, which provide better spam and anti-virus protection. In preparation for this, we recommend that you manually migrate your Popbox(es) yourself by assigning a domain name to your existing package.
Although we will be performing automatic migrations starting from September, we recommend that you migrate your Popbox yourself as it means that you can decide exactly which domain name to use for your new Mailbox(es). Furthermore, we cannot perform an automatic migration if you have multiple domains in your account, as we won’t be able to determine which one to use, and will consequently delete your Popbox(es).
To do this, simply follow the instructions outlined below:
Step 1: Backing up your email contacts
Log in to your 123 Reg webmail account.
Once logged in, click the Menu icon in the top-right corner and choose the Address Book option.
From there, select the 3-bar icon next to Contacts, then from the menu, select Export.
Your contacts will now be exported and saved to your hard drive.
Choose the type of folder to download – either a CSV or vCard. We recommend using CSV. Once you’ve chosen your preferred format, select Export.
Step 2: Migrating your Popbox to a Mailbox
Start by logging in to your 123 Reg Control Panel. Under Manage Active Products, select Migrate opposite the Email field.
Alternatively, you can scroll down to the Email section and select Manage Email.
On the next page, you’ll see a list of your current email packages. You can quickly find any Popbox addresses that you have by selecting Filter.
From there, select the All tab opposite Package and choose Popbox from the drop-down menu that appears.
Select Options for the Popbox you wish to migrate and choose Manage Type from the drop-down menu that appears.
On the next page, click Proceed to start the migration. This should only take a few seconds to complete.
If, however, you have more than 1 domain in your 123 Reg account, you’ll need to select which one you’d like to use for your new Mailbox first. Simply select the empty field and choose your preferred domain from the drop-down menu that appears.
Once it’s complete, a confirmation message will appear at the top of the page informing you that your Popbox has been successfully migrated.
To return to your Control Panel, simply click Back.
Once the migration is complete, your Mailbox username will be replaced with your new email address. However, your password will remain the same. You can use these details to log in to our Webmail Service.
You can also use the following settings to add your Mailbox account to an email client such as Outlook or Apple Mail:
Incoming mail server:
- POP3: pop.123-reg.co.uk
- IMAP: imap.123-reg.co.uk
Outgoing mail server:
- SMTP: smtp.123-reg.co.uk
Please note: if you’ve previously set up your Popbox on an email client, you will need to amend your settings to the above and update your username to match your new address. For more information on this, please read our Support article: How do I set up an Email Client with 123-mail?
Furthermore, if you’ve set up email forwarding on your Popbox(es), you will need to update them so that they forward messages to your new Mailbox(es) address.

We do, however, recommend you use the IMAP protocol.
Step 3: Importing your contacts
Log back in to your 123 Reg webmail account using your new Mailbox address.
Access your Address Book. From there, click the Menu button and select Import from the drop-down menu that appears.
You will now be asked to upload the file you created in step one. Once you’ve done that, select Import to complete the process.
