What are the most common FTP problems?

This article will list some of the connection problems you may have when using FTP.

Here are the most frequent error messages you may receive when using FTP and how to resolve them.

530 Login authentication failed

This means that the username and password you’ve used is incorrect. To find your FTP details, please follow the instructions outlined in this guide: How can I find my FTP username and password?

If you’ve recently changed your password, make sure you have updated it in your FTP client as well.

421 – Too Many Connections

Your FTP client is creating more connections than it can handle. The limit for this is 8, so you will need to remove any unnecessary connections.

Connection refused by server

This means that you’re using the wrong FTP port number. Make sure that you’re using port 21.

‘Connection timed out’ or ‘Can’t open data connection’

Check that your Internet connection is working, and that you are allowed to use port 21.

If you cannot connect via FTP using the domain name as the FTP Server, please try using the IP address. If you’re not sure where to find your IP address, please read the following article: How can I find the correct IP address/temporary URL for my hosting account?
