Why is my website not working?

So, you’ve typed in your domain name for your website and have found that it isn’t working. Here are a few reasons why this might be happening:

1. You’ve entered it incorrectly

It could be that you’ve misspelt your domain name when searching for it or have internet connectivity issues.

2. Your domain name isn’t linked to your website (hosted with 123 Reg)

One of the simplest reasons why your website may not be working could be because your domain name is not connected to your website. Don’t worry though, this is easy to resolve!

If your website is hosted with 123 Reg, read the following guides:

If, however, your website is hosted with an alternative provider, then please read the following guide: How do I point my 123 Reg domain name to my 3rd party website?

3. You’ve made changes to your domain name in your Control Panel

If you’ve made changes to your domain’s DNS such as connecting your domain name to your website, changing your nameservers, or even adding a web forwarder, this can cause a 24-48 hour propagation period.

Propagation occurs because your domain name’s information is being updated across the internet and on multiple servers, so this can take some time.

Once this has completed, your website should be visible to your customers.

If, however, you’ve passed the 48-hour propagation period and your website is still not online, please view our other solutions below or get in touch with our Support team.

4. Your domain hasn’t been verified yet

Another simple reason for your website not working could be because your domain name has not yet been verified.

When you purchase your domain name, you should receive an email asking for it to be verified. Simply click the link within the email to verify your domain name.

If you have a domain name ending in .uk, .wales or .cymru, and you no longer have your domain verification email, you will need to contact 123 Reg to have your email re-sent.

Alternatively, you can follow the steps outlined in the What do I need to do to validate my domain? section of the following guide: Understanding the ICANN Verification Process

5. Your domain name has expired

Another key reason for your website not working could be because your domain name has expired.

If this is the case, you may be able to renew and retain your domain. For more details on how to do this, please read the following articles:

It may also be worth checking to see if your Website Builder or Web Hosting package has expired too.

6. You haven’t published your website yet

If you’ve created your website using Website Builder or an Online Shop package, it could be that your site hasn’t been published to the web yet.

Read our guide to see how to perform this: How do I publish my site in Website Builder?
