Frequently asked questions

What is an SSL Certificate and why do I need one?

An SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) Certificate is a data file that protects the sensitive information exchanged between users and websites, like passwords or credit card details. Every site that uses an SSL Certificate automatically switches from an HTTP to an HTTPS encryption.

SSL Certificates are issued by trusted authorities who verify the identity of your site or business. Once approved, you can install the certificate on your domain to encrypt your website pages.

What is Managed SSL?

Managed SSL is a service where we handle all the technical aspects of your SSL Certificate for you. From installation and renewal to troubleshooting, we take care of it all. This means your website remains secure, and you can focus on your business without worrying about SSL management.

What type of SSL certificate do I get with Managed SSL Service?

You can choose three types of SSL Certificates with our Managed SSL Service.

A Domain Validation (DV) SSL Certificate secures a single website with full encryption, providing a simple way to ensure your site is safe and trusted by visitors.

A SAN (Subject Alternative Name) SSL Certificate is ideal for managing multiple domains. It secures one primary website, plus up to four additional domains under a single certificate.

Finally, a Wildcard SSL Certificate secures a website and all its subdomains (e.g., shop.example.com, blog.example.com), making it perfect for businesses with multiple subdomains to protect.

What is a SAN Certificate?

A Subject Alternative Name (SAN) SSL Certificate secures multiple websites with different domain names. For instance, a single SAN SSL certificate could secure both www.example.com and store.example.com, for easier management and lower costs compared to having individual certificates for each domain.

How long does it take to set up Managed SSL Certificate(s)?

Depending on which SSL certificate you're purchasing, the issuing turnaround can range from 1 hour to 5 days, but we process most requests within 48 hours. We'll let you know when it’s ready. Once we've successfully installed and tested your SSL certificate, we'll send you a confirmation email.

How do I verify my identity for an SSL certificate?

To issue an SSL certificate, the issuing authority needs to verify your identity or business. This process helps ensure the security of the SSL system. Although anyone can use a Domain Validation SSL Certificate, only registered businesses will be able to use our Organisational Validation and Extended Validation Certificates.

How do I renew an expired SSL Certificate?

If your SSL certificate is hosted on our cPanel and set to auto-renew, no further action is needed. However, if auto-renew is not enabled, your certificate will expire and can't be renewed. To prevent this from happening, you can set your Certificate to auto-renew within your 123 Reg Control Panel. Alternatively, you can manually renew your Certificate up to 120 days before and 14 days after the expiration date by following the steps outlined in the following article: How do I renew my SSL Certificate?
