But cant having too many or the wrong type of affiliates damage your page ranking with Google? Although, as my site is about SEO and the web an affiliate link with 123 would be a good idea for me. Im not so sure about how good it would be for others? any answers?

Whilst it is true that Google has been targeting websites that simply put dozens of affiliate banners and links on their site with no content, it is not a case of “the wrong type of links”, but rather the concept of providing no added value Google dislikes.

Affiliates that simply serve banners and nothing else will struggle to achieve a good rank in Google, however affiliates that provide good content e.g. reviews, opinion, comparisons etc are offering people something useful and as such Google will treat that site the same as any other.

The subject of your site doesn’t necessarily have to be directly associated with the affiliate links you choose, although conversions will be low becuase your target market won’t be interested in the adverts e.g. a banner for alcopops on a retirement home’s website.

While there are many reasons as to why your affiliate sales may not be what you expected, you probably have the basis of a good income stream. Small changes to the presentation, your promotion of the site, and your mix of products can and will have a massive effect on your sales. If you do the basics well, the rest will follow, and once you have the basis of a good affiliate sales income, you can replicate this time and time again on other sites.
