IP Address: What is an IP Address?

An IP address is a unique string of numbers assigned to every device and website connected to the internet.

It’s how the internet knows where to send information — whether that’s loading a webpage, sending an email, or streaming a video.

Broadly speaking, it’s what happens in the background when you type in a web address like www.your-big-idea.co.uk.

What does an IP address look like?

Every website on the internet is hosted on a server, and every server has an IP address. When someone wants to visit your website, their browser needs to find that server. It does so using an IP address.

Most IP addresses you’ll encounter look something like 192.168.1.1

A series of numbers separated by dots, they’re not exactly easy to remember. In fact, the new gen of IP addresses (known as IPv6) are longer still, with a combination of numbers and letters (like “2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334”). Even worse!

Enter domain names: a human-friendly solution

A domain name is a memorable, readable address that maps to an IP address behind the scenes. Instead of asking your customers to visit that long number, they simply type your-big-idea.co.uk.

When they do, the internet’s DNS (Domain Name System) quietly matches the domain to the right IP address. You don’t need to think about it — it just works.
